The Department of Commerce was established in 1970 with the purpose to promote world class research and teaching in Commerce . The first programme offered by the Department was Masters Programme in Commerce. The research programmes for M. Phil and Ph. D were launched a little later. To keep pace with the changing requirements of public and private enterprises, the Department at different stages has launched various professional programmes in the area of Management. The Department has a privilege of being pioneer in the dissemination of Management Education upto 1991, when the department of management came into being as a separate entity.

The Department intends to be one among the centres of excellence in Finance and Accounting Education and Research in the country.

The Department strives to impart quality education in the area of Finance and Accounting reinforced by experiential learning administered to students who will play significant and productive roles in the development of the Indian Economy within the global business environment.
Goals
To provide students with sufficient academic, technical and professional base to fillip them to pursue careers in Finance and Accounting.
To equip and laden the students with knowledge, understanding and skill base enabling them to use the same effectively in the organizational settings in which they are employed.
To conduct research that would address contemporary issues confronting business organizations which would form an edifice for a strong policy implication programme necessary for future economic development of the country.
